Continuons notre série sur l’étymologie (l’origine des mots). Cette semaine, un mot anglais que vous connaissez sûrement, « to travel », qui signifie en français voyager, et qui dérive de manière surprenante du mot français « travail » !

Let’s go ahead and study more etymology. This week, we have chosen an English word, « travel » and even if its French origin isn’t surprising, the French word it derives from is unexpected. Indeed, « travel » comes from the old French word « travailler » which means « to work ». How come ? What is the link between to travel ant to work? Actually, in the Middle Ages, « travailler » also meant « to torment » and « to strive » and the reason why is because journeys in those  days used to be long, exhausting and dangerous (just like work!).

What is even more surprising is that « travailler » derives from the Latin term tripalium, which was an instrument of torture !
